⚠️ The most important thing to know first
Grab bars must be anchored into wall studs, not drywall alone. A bar anchored only into drywall will pull out under load and cause a fall. Have them installed by a handyman who will locate and anchor into studs. Cost: $50–$120 per bar installed, 30–60 minutes per bar.
Grab Bars
Grab bars have the strongest clinical evidence for bathroom fall prevention of any single modification. Install at minimum: one horizontal bar inside the shower (hip height, for balance) and one vertical bar at the shower entry (for stepping in and out).

A standard toilet height of 15 inches makes sitting and standing significantly harder as mobility declines. Raised seats and safety frames address this without replacing the toilet.
For users who have had hip replacement surgery: check with the surgeon regarding height restrictions before purchasing. Some replacements require seats above a specific height.
Non-Slip Flooring & Bath Mats
Non-slip mats and adhesive strips reduce fall risk on wet shower and bath floors. Look for high suction cup counts and drainage holes.
- Adhesive non-slip strips: Applied directly to the shower or tub floor, the most secure option. Look for textured PVC strips rated ASTM F462. Cost: $10–$25 per pack.
- Suction-cup bath mats: Removable and washable. Choose mats with 40+ suction cups and drainage holes. Cost: $15–$35.
- Avoid: Small rugs outside the bath or shower without non-slip backing, one of the most common fall hazards in the bathroom. Remove them entirely or replace with a non-slip version.
Handheld Showerheads
A handheld showerhead on a slide bar allows seated showering without reaching, and removes the need to turn the body to rinse. Works with any existing shower arm.
A hose length of at least 60 inches (5 feet) is needed for comfortable seated use. Many budget handheld showerheads come with 59-inch hoses, confirm length before purchasing.
Tub Transfer Benches
If stepping over the tub edge has become difficult or unsafe, a transfer bench eliminates that movement entirely, at $55–$90, before considering a tub-to-shower renovation.
Drive Medical Tub Transfer Bench with Backrest
$55–$90 · Straddles tub wall · 400 lb capacity
- Eliminates the need to step over the tub edge, the most dangerous bathroom movement
- 400 lb capacity is the highest of any shower chair reviewed
- Suction cups on inside legs prevent sliding in the tub
- OTs frequently recommend this before recommending renovation
- Straddle movement requires some lateral mobility, assess this specifically
- Only works with tub/shower combination, not walk-in showers
